Lever Street to the World.
Since 1945.
A Man, a Mill,
and a Lot of Metal Powder
In 1945, the war had just ended and Britain was rebuilding. Ronald Britton – along with his wife Mrs B.C. Britton as co-director – saw an opportunity. The manufacturing industries powering the country’s recovery all needed the same thing: aluminium pastes, bronze powders, and metallic printing inks.
They set up in modest premises on Lever Street, Manchester. The early product range was eclectic – aluminium flake, bronze powders, lead, zinc, antimony, even tinsel powders (yes, glitter). Printing inks were manufactured by Ronald’s brothers AGW and FR Britton down in London. It was a proper family operation.
By 1946 they’d already outgrown Lever Street, moving to larger premises at 37 Brown Street that could handle both office and warehouse – and they acquired a mill in Kettleshulme, Cheshire for dyeing bronze powders and manufacturing metallic pastes. They even had a side business screen-printing metallic colours onto dress fabrics. Busy times.

Fires, Moves, and
a Lot of Metal Powder
Eighty years is a long time. There have been a few detours along the way.
Ronald Britton Opens for Business
Founded on Lever Street, Manchester by Ronald and Mrs B.C. Britton. The product range: aluminium pastes, bronze powders, metallic printing inks – and anything else post-war industry needed. Inks came courtesy of Ronald’s brothers down in London.
Brown Street & the Kettleshulme Mill
One year in and already too big for Lever Street. New premises at 37 Brown Street, Manchester, plus a mill in Kettleshulme, Cheshire – for dyeing metallic flake powders, making coloured pastes, manufacturing inks, and even screen-printing metallic colours onto dress fabrics.
The Kettleshulme Fire
The mill is destroyed by a fire originating from an aluminium sieving machine. (Aluminium powder and heat, not the best combination.) Undeterred, the company buys a new factory at Heyes Lane, Alderley Edge and carries on. Because that's what you do.
Grosvenor Chambers, Deansgate
Offices move to 16 Deansgate, in the heart of Manchester. The product range keeps expanding: atomised aluminium, lead, zinc, solder powders, and more. The business is growing into a proper metal powder operation.
Diamond Tools & Precision Powders
The diamond tool industry is booming, and with it demand for precisely graded bronze and copper powders for matrix bonding. Ronald Britton becomes a go-to supplier for the sector – a position the company still holds today.
The Move to Rochdale
After Deansgate is redeveloped, operations relocate to Rochdale – the town the company would call home from here on. Mr Ronald Britton retires to Devon the same year, but the business that carries his name is just getting started.
International Supply Begins
What started as a UK operation goes worldwide. Engineers and manufacturers across Europe, Asia and beyond start calling. The product range broadens to include aluminium, brass and iron powders alongside custom blends for specific applications.
ISO 9001 & 14001 Certified
Quality management and environmental responsibility formalised with dual ISO certification. Not because it looked good on a brochure – because the industries we serve require it, and we believe in doing things to the proper standard.
Buckley Road & Pure Metal Powder
The company moves to its current home on Buckley Road, Rochdale, and refocuses entirely on what it does best: specialist metal powders. One material. Done properly. EcoVadis top 8%. Over 20 countries served.
