Why oxidation and moisture matter
Metal powders have a very high surface area relative to their mass, which makes them more reactive than the equivalent solid metal. Exposure to air and humidity can promote surface oxidation and moisture pickup, altering colour, flow, apparent density and sintering or reaction behaviour. Fine and atomised grades of copper, tin, bronze, brass, aluminium and iron are particularly sensitive because their small particle size increases the reactive surface still further. Minimising air exposure and controlling humidity are therefore the foundations of good storage.
Storage conditions to aim for
Store powders in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources and sources of ignition. Keep containers clear of the floor and external walls to reduce the risk of condensation, and keep incompatible materials (such as strong acids, oxidisers or moisture) well separated. Stable conditions matter as much as any single target value, because repeated temperature swings encourage condensation inside part-used containers.

Shelf life and stock rotation
Shelf life varies by metal, particle size and packaging, so always treat the product data sheet and any stated best-before guidance as the primary reference. Operate first-in, first-out (FIFO) rotation so older stock is used before newer stock, and label every container clearly with the material, grade and receipt date. Safe handling of fine and reactive powders
Fine powders can create airborne dust and, in some cases, present dust explosion or reactivity hazards. Handle them in well-ventilated areas, minimise dust generation, and avoid creating dust clouds near ignition sources. Static electricity can be a concern, so earthing and bonding of equipment may be appropriate for sensitive materials. Inertisation, replacing the air above a powder with an inert gas such as nitrogen or argon, is a recognised technique for reducing oxidation and reactivity risk with the most sensitive grades. Always follow the product safety data sheet (SDS) and your local regulations, and provide operators with suitable personal protective equipment.
Packaging, re-sealing and vacuum packing
Keep powders in their original sealed packaging until needed. Once a container is opened, re-seal it promptly and thoroughly to limit air and moisture ingress; decanting only what is required for a run reduces exposure of the remaining stock. For sensitive materials, vacuum packing or purging with an inert gas before re-sealing further slows oxidation. Desiccants can help control residual humidity inside sealed containers.
